Duties of the District Vice Chair/
Membership Chair
The vice/membership chair plays an important role in the district leadership. Districts may choose to elect a vice chair and a membership chair or combine their duties. If your district does not elect a membership chair, the vice chair assumes all of these responsibilities.
Duties of the Vice Chair
Typical duties of the vice chair include:
- Presiding at district meetings in the absence of the chair;
- Encouraging attendance at district meetings by making both members and non-members/prospects feel welcome;
- Supporting all district officers when called upon;
- Assuming membership duties outlined below unless the district chooses to elect a membership chair;
- Acting as government relations liaison to the district; and
- Working closely with PMA government relations staff to keep the members of the district informed on issues that might affect their companies. The GR liaison will receive monthly fax briefings on issues of importance. If your district does not elect a Vice Chair, another person may be selected to serve as the GR liaison.
Duties of the Membership Chair
One of the key responsibilities of this position is membership promotion. Membership growth provides each district a source of new ideas and participants in district activities. More importantly, it ensures the continuation of district activities in your area.
Many districts form "Membership Promotion" committees to help recruit new members, and the vice chair/membership chair usually presides over these committees. Typically, these committees select 5-10 top prospects each year and encourage them to attend local district meetings and become PMA members. PMA staff at headquarters can help you with new member recruitment.
PMA staff regularly contacts potential members. However, your involvement in membership recruitment and retention efforts is invaluable. Coordination between staff and district officers is the key to effective membership development.
Even though staff follows-up on these prospects within a few weeks, the district vice/membership chair may also be called upon to contact them and urge them to become involved with PMA and the district.
