PMA's Student Ambassador Program - Guide to Promoting Metalforming Careers

Your Guide for Promoting Metalforming Careers

If you're like most metalforming executives, you're concerned about the shortage of skilled employees. Throughout the industry, productivity is threatened and growth is hampered by lack of qualified people. And the problem is getting worse.

You can do something about it! Here's your opportunity (and resource kit) to be an ambassador for the industry right in your home town.

Simply take these "Ambassador Kits" to your community schools and discuss the benefits of careers in the metalforming industry with students, parents and school administrators and teachers - they all influence career choices. Participate in an event promoting metalforming careers to one or more of these groups. Or sponsor one of your own!

Each kit contains 25 copies of PMA's "Choices" flyer and one copy of PMA's "Careers in Metalforming" videotape. And there's a place right on the front to place your business card or imprint your company logo.

Additional kits and brochures are available from PMA.

How Can Your Business Use These Tools?

  • Start by contacting your local School Board to tell our story, show the video, and distribute brochures
  • Meet with high school principals and counselors to explain opportunities in metalforming
  • Participate in Job Fairs and Career Days
  • Provide speakers to local educational organizations

  • Develop and implement apprenticeship programs in cooperation with local schools
  • Organize plant tours for students
  • Communicate with your middle school or junior high. It's never too early to get students thinking about a career in metalforming

At the College and Tech School Levels You Can:

  • Contact placement offices
  • Participate in job fairs
  • Utilize job posting services
  • Organize internships
  • Develop "contract learning" opportunities or scholarship programs

And Don't Forget, You Can Promote Careers in Metalforming Within Your Organization:

Student Ambassador Program Kits Well Received

An Audience Analysis Survey by West Glen Communications recently reported that the Student Ambassador video and accompanying "Choices" flyer are getting the "metalforming message" out to hundreds of young people across the U.S. and Canada. According to West Glen, the firm hired to distribute and monitor the Program, 721 high schools, 676 youth groups, 70 junior high/middle schools, and 24 commercial operations have seen the video since August 1997.

Statistics of note include the following:

  • Over 76% rated the informational value "excellent or good."
  • Over 87% rated the technical presentation "excellent or good."
  • Nearly 65% of the instructors felt their students' awareness of the industry and job opportunities was "raised significantly," and over 29% said their students' awareness was "raised somewhat."
  • Of the instructors who distributed the Choices flyer (88%), over 80% felt their students' level of acceptance was "excellent or good."
  • Over 94% plan to use the video and literature in the future.
