An apprentice is a person who learns a craft or trade on the job under the instruction of a skilled worker (journeyman) while taking related classroom courses, usually at a community college or institution of technical learning. Apprenticeship programs can vary from company to company and state to state. Generally, all apprenticeship programs involve both classroom work and on-the-job training for a specific range of skills under direct supervision and sponsorship. Apprentices earn wages while they learn - on a progressive scale that increases as experience and competency increases. Apprenticeship programs have an apprentice contract which states the terms and conditions of employment and training, including the number of years for completion, the number of hours needed both in the classroom and on the job, the rate of pay which will be used and the criteria for successful completion.
