Safety Tip: 10 Reasons to Implement Near-Miss Reporting

Wondering how to define a near miss in your metal forming shop? Want to better understand what is required for near-miss reporting? Learn all of this and more from a recent online article from the safety-program management consultants at Safety International.

“The definition of a near miss is an unplanned event that did not result in injury, hazard, or damage but had the potential to do so,” the article begins. “Also known as a ‘close call,’ a near miss often identifies a system weakness that, if not corrected, could lead to dangerous hazards or injury in the future.”

Also stressed: Many near misses result from human error, and “when it comes to near misses, employees and employers have the responsibility to identify, report and improve on potential hazards,” the article notes.

Specifically, employers must create clear policies and procedures around reporting near misses, and, of course, promote a culture of reporting and encourage workers to participate without fear of discipline. Employers also should provide near-miss training and educate the importance of near-miss reporting.
