Mushfig Mahmudov, a scholarship recipient from the Tennessee District, has developed a deep understanding of manufacturing and metalforming through a combination of extensive industry experience and advanced technical education. His interest in the field was shaped during a distinguished career in shipbuilding, where he spent more than a decade working at Baku Shipyard as a Lead Hull Structural and Outfitting Engineer. In this role, he was responsible for the detailed design of various types of vessels and worked closely with fabrication and manufacturing teams to bring those designs to life.

Throughout his time in the shipbuilding industry, Mushfig prepared shop drawings, nesting plans and production documentation that directly guided the fabrication of vessels from raw steel plates. Watching designs evolve from engineering concepts into completed structures provided him with valuable insight into the relationship between design, manufacturing efficiency, material utilization and structural performance. This experience allowed him to develop a strong foundation in manufacturing-oriented design while gaining a practical understanding of production processes.

His extensive exposure to manufacturing operations reinforced the importance of engineers who possess expertise in both design and production. Motivated by this realization, Mushfig chose to pursue advanced graduate studies to strengthen his technical knowledge and expand his ability to contribute to the industry. He recognized that the future of manufacturing depends on professionals who can bridge the gap between engineering theory and practical production challenges.

Currently, Mushfig is pursuing a PhD while serving as a Graduate Research Assistant with a focus on manufacturing-related research. Through his academic work, he has gained hands-on experience in metal sheet forming, die design concepts and forming process analysis. He has also become proficient with advanced simulation tools such as Altair Inspire Form, which enable manufacturers to evaluate and optimize forming processes before production begins. These technologies help reduce costs, minimize material waste and improve manufacturing efficiency by reducing reliance on trial-and-error methods.

In addition to his research activities, Mushfig serves as the student lead of the METAL program, where he supports educational manufacturing bootcamps for students and industry professionals. He views workforce development as a critical component of strengthening the manufacturing industry and believes that sharing knowledge is an important professional responsibility. Through his leadership role, he helps transfer practical skills, technical expertise and industry experience to the next generation of manufacturing professionals.

Over the next several years, Mushfig plans to continue conducting applied research while expanding his involvement in workforce development initiatives and industry partnerships. His goal is to use the knowledge gained through both industry experience and academic research to improve manufacturing processes, support workforce training and contribute to the development of highly skilled manufacturing professionals. By combining practical engineering experience with advanced research, he hopes to make meaningful contributions to the future of the metalforming industry.
