Chance Johnson – 2026 Scholarship Recipient

Chance Johnson- California Polytechnic State University, Manufacturing Engineering

SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT

  • California District: $2,000
  • PMA Educational Foundation: $1,000
  • Total: $3,000

Chance Johnson, a scholarship recipient from the California District, discovered a passion for engineering and manufacturing when he toured the Manufacturing and Design (MaD) program at his high school. The facility was equipped with advanced manufacturing technology, including HAAS CNC mills and lathes, laser cutters, 3D printers, powder coating equipment, anodizing systems and other industry-grade machinery. While initially overwhelmed by the scope of the equipment and technology, Chance quickly embraced the opportunity to learn and set a personal goal of becoming proficient with every machine in the shop. That experience sparked a lasting interest in manufacturing engineering and ultimately shaped his career aspirations.

Beginning in his sophomore year, Chance dedicated himself to mastering manufacturing processes and equipment. Learning the fundamentals of speeds, feeds and machining operations on a HAAS TM2 vertical milling center provided a strong foundation in CNC machining. He soon applied those skills in the SVMA Tic Tac Toe Manufacturing Challenge, where students were encouraged to create innovative versions of the classic game. Combining his interest in 3D printing with his developing machining expertise, Chance designed a product featuring dovetail joints machined to tolerances of .001 inch, allowing components to slide together smoothly and precisely.

The project demonstrated not only his technical ability but also his attention to detail and commitment to quality. The finished product featured high-quality surface finishes, carefully designed chamfers and precise manufacturing techniques. His work was recognized when he successfully sold the project to the president of Snowline Engineering, a local manufacturing company. Through this experience, Chance learned the importance of detailed documentation, professional communication and presenting ideas confidently to industry leaders.

Chance’s passion for fabrication and manufacturing continued to grow through his involvement in competitive robotics. As a member of his robotics team, he designed and machined a custom low-profile motor mount from 6061 aluminum and finished the component with powder coating to create a professional-quality appearance. Building upon this success, he went on to machine numerous additional parts, including complex four-operation game pieces and weight-reduced drivetrain plates. His contributions played a key role in helping his team qualify for the Northern California FIRST Tech Challenge Regionals.

Looking ahead, Chance aspires to become a lead machinist and manufacturing professional within a major organization. Whether he ultimately pursues entrepreneurship or advances within an established company, his goal is to contribute through a strong commitment to quality, efficiency and continuous improvement. He recognizes that successful manufacturing depends on effective teamwork and values the opportunity to collaborate with others to solve complex problems. Chance takes pride in listening to different perspectives, working toward shared goals and helping teams find the best solutions through cooperation and communication.

In addition to his technical abilities, Chance consistently demonstrates initiative and leadership. Whether organizing equipment, improving shop efficiency or taking responsibility for challenging projects under tight deadlines, he willingly steps forward to ensure tasks are completed to the highest standards. His dedication to excellence, willingness to learn and strong work ethic have distinguished him as a promising future leader in manufacturing.

Chance’s combination of technical expertise, hands-on manufacturing experience, leadership skills and passion for continuous improvement position him for a successful future in manufacturing engineering. His determination to master advanced manufacturing technologies and contribute meaningful solutions reflects the qualities that will enable him to thrive in the industry.

The Precision Metalforming Association Educational Foundation (PMAEF) proudly congratulates Chance Johnson on being selected as a scholarship recipient. His outstanding commitment to manufacturing, innovation and leadership makes him highly deserving of this recognition. PMAEF wishes Chance continued success in his education and future career in manufacturing engineering.
