Elise Burkut, a scholarship recipient from the Chicago District, discovered early in her education that success is not defined by a single learning style. Throughout much of her academic career, she was encouraged to enroll in advanced courses because of her strong testing abilities and academic performance. While she could succeed in those classes, she eventually realized that traditional classroom learning did not fully align with the way she learned best. She found herself increasingly stressed by the workload and recognized that she gained the deepest understanding when she could apply concepts through hands-on experiences.
This realization became a turning point in Elise’s educational journey. She discovered that she thrives when solving real-world problems, working with her hands and seeing the direct results of her efforts. Identifying her preferred learning style while still in high school allowed her to pursue courses that better matched her strengths and interests. Classes such as Automotive Systems, Engineering Essentials, Computer-Integrated Manufacturing and Welding gave her opportunities to apply knowledge in practical ways while developing valuable technical skills. Rather than working solely toward grades, she found motivation in creating finished projects that she could evaluate, improve and take pride in completing.
Among all her technical courses, welding had the greatest impact. Elise was drawn to welding because it combines precision, technical skill and creativity. She quickly learned that welding involves much more than simply joining pieces of metal. It requires patience, concentration and attention to detail. Each project presents an opportunity to improve technique, produce cleaner welds, create stronger joints and enhance safety. She appreciates that welding demands thoughtful planning and disciplined execution while providing visible evidence of growth and skill development.
Elise also recognizes the significant role welding plays in society. She understands that welders are essential to industries such as construction, manufacturing, transportation, agriculture and energy. Welded structures and equipment support many of the systems people depend on every day, from bridges and buildings to vehicles, pipelines and industrial machinery. She values the fact that welders not only build critical infrastructure but also maintain and repair it, helping keep businesses operating safely and communities functioning effectively.
Choosing welding has provided Elise with a career path that she believes is both meaningful and practical. The profession aligns with her talents, interests and preferred way of learning while offering opportunities to make tangible contributions through skilled craftsmanship. She takes pride in developing abilities that can have a direct impact on the quality, reliability and safety of the products and structures people use every day.
Looking ahead, Elise plans to continue building on her technical education beyond a two-year college program. Whether through further engineering studies or employment within an engineering-related industry, she hopes to expand her skills and continue contributing to the fields of manufacturing and engineering. Her commitment to lifelong learning, personal growth and hands-on problem-solving will serve as a strong foundation for future success.
