Spencer Johnson, a recipient from the Southeast District, developed an interest in welding after graduating from high school and realizing that hands-on work was a much better fit for him than a traditional desk job. He has always enjoyed staying active, working with his hands and solving practical problems. These qualities naturally led him toward the welding and fabrication industry, where he can apply his skills in a rewarding and meaningful way.
One of the experiences that helped shape Spencer’s career interests was his time working at Woodruff Scout Reservation, where he spent three summers on staff. For two summers, he worked in the aquatics department as a lifeguard, while his third summer was spent serving as a commissioner. In that role, he was responsible for helping maintain camp facilities and repairing anything that was broken throughout the property. Through this experience, Spencer discovered how much he enjoyed repairing equipment, maintaining facilities and working alongside the camp rangers to solve problems. It reinforced his preference for hands-on work and showed him the satisfaction that comes from fixing and improving things.
Spencer was also introduced to welding through a winter camp program offered by the Boy Scouts. While the class marked his first experience with welding, it sparked his interest in the trade and gave him a glimpse into the skills and craftsmanship involved. Although he recognizes that he is still developing his welding abilities, he is eager to continue learning and improving through education and hands-on experience.
In addition to his technical interests, Spencer has demonstrated strong leadership and organizational skills throughout his involvement in scouting. He served as both Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) and Patrol Leader, positions that required responsibility, communication, teamwork and leadership. These experiences helped him develop the ability to work effectively with others, manage responsibilities and lead by example. He takes pride in being dependable, being organized, submitting work on time and consistently arriving prepared for commitments and events.
Looking ahead, Spencer plans to pursue a career in automotive welding and fabrication. His passion for cars has inspired him to combine his interests and build a career within an industry he genuinely enjoys. He is excited by the opportunity to manufacture, modify and fabricate components that contribute to vehicle performance and design.
While Spencer may not yet have extensive welding experience, he brings determination, a strong work ethic and a commitment to continuous improvement. He is dedicated to giving his full effort in everything he does, whether that means learning new skills, completing projects or helping those around him. His willingness to work hard and his enthusiasm for the welding and fabrication industry position him for future success in the skilled trades.
