Paul Haapala has been fascinated by manufacturing from a young age. As a child, he wondered how Lego pieces fit together so precisely and how each piece was produced identically. He later discovered that mass production manufacturing was the answer, sparking his interest in the field. His experiences both inside and outside of school have deepened this passion and motivated him to pursue a career in manufacturing engineering.

Last summer, Paul contributed to the renovation and reframing of a 140-year-old home. This complex project exposed him to the importance of teamwork and safety in construction, further igniting his appreciation for collaborative production environments. As a high school student, he participated in the Formula SAE club at Saint Cloud State University, where he designed eccentric differential mounts to reduce torque on the vehicle frame and improve accessibility. His responsibilities included modeling and manufacturing parts to precise tolerance specifications while meeting Formula SAE requirements.

Paul has also taken advantage of the Post Secondary Enrollment Options program, allowing him to study math, science and engineering courses at the college level.  He aspires to address the challenges of developing innovative technologies that enhance energy production, improve vehicle efficiency and pioneer aeronautical advancements. Paul aims to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. He plans to gain industry experience through internships, particularly in metalforming companies focused on vehicle production, as a foundation for his career.

After graduation, Paul intends to optimize production methods for cutting-edge technologies. Ultimately, he hopes to start a business that provides innovative solutions to manufacturing challenges, benefiting society at large.
Receiving the PMAEF and district scholarship has allowed Paul to focus more fully on his education and career goals by reducing the need for off-campus work. The financial aid also has enabled him to participate more actively in engineering clubs, tutor his peers and dedicate additional time to studying. In essence, the scholarship has greatly enhanced his educational experience and is helping him develop the skills necessary for success in manufacturing engineering.

Good luck to you, Paul! You are going to do great things!
