Anthony Petkov, a scholarship recipient from the Twin Cities District, is pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology with a concentration in Mechatronics at Northern Michigan University. Through his coursework and hands-on manufacturing experience, he has developed a strong interest in automation and the improvement of mechanical systems. Anthony enjoys understanding how machines operate and identifying ways to make manufacturing processes safer, more efficient and more reliable.
His interest in manufacturing grew significantly during his summer employment at Ajax Metal Forming Solutions, where he worked as a press operator. In this role, Anthony operated industrial punch presses and followed detailed production procedures to ensure parts were manufactured safely and accurately. The experience taught him the importance of precision, consistency and attention to detail in a manufacturing environment. He also learned how equipment setup, maintenance and proper operation directly influence product quality and production efficiency. Working on the shop floor provided valuable insight into how mechanical systems function in real-world manufacturing operations.
Anthony plans to continue pursuing summer internships in fabrication and toolmaking as opportunities become available. He is eager to gain additional hands-on experience within manufacturing environments while continuing to expand his technical knowledge and practical skills. These experiences will help prepare him for a successful career in advanced manufacturing and automation.
His professional experience has complemented what he is learning in the classroom. At Northern Michigan University, Anthony studies mechanical systems, electronics and control systems, all of which are critical components of mechatronics. Observing manufacturing systems in operation reinforced his interest in automation and highlighted how technology can reduce manual labor, improve workplace safety and increase productivity. He has also come to appreciate how even small improvements in mechanical systems can have a significant impact on manufacturing operations.
Anthony’s long-term career goal is to work in manufacturing automation, where he can help design, improve and maintain automated mechanical systems. He is particularly interested in positions focused on automation, controls and continuous improvement. As his career progresses, he hopes to take on leadership roles that allow him to guide projects, mentor others and contribute to the advancement of manufacturing processes.
Through his dedication to manufacturing, hands-on industry experience and commitment to furthering his education, Anthony has demonstrated the qualities needed to succeed in the manufacturing industry. His passion for automation, strong technical foundation and eagerness to continue learning position him for a successful future in engineering and manufacturing.
