Eli Chapman, a recipient from the Southeast District, became interested in manufacturing long before he knew what the industry was called. From a young age, he was drawn to understanding how things worked by taking them apart, rebuilding them and finding ways to improve them. Over time, that natural curiosity evolved into a clear career goal: designing and manufacturing products for the outdoor industry that are more sustainable, accessible and practical for the people who rely on them. For Eli, manufacturing provides a unique opportunity to transform ideas into tangible products that can be tested, refined and improved. This hands-on approach to problem-solving is what motivates him to pursue a future in the field.
Over the past several years, Eli has gained valuable experiences that have helped shape his skills and his professional aspirations. Working as a bike mechanic exposed him to the significant amount of waste generated within the outdoor industry, including excess cardboard, discarded tubes, plastic packaging and other single-use materials that often end up in landfills. This experience strengthened his desire to find more sustainable solutions through thoughtful design and manufacturing practices.
Eli further expanded his knowledge through his work at Noke Van Co., a company that builds custom vans. There he learned how raw materials are transformed into precise, functional components through machining, cutting, fabrication and assembly processes. He developed an appreciation for the craftsmanship, teamwork and attention to detail required to bring a project from concept to completion. Watching products evolve from an initial idea into a finished installation reinforced his passion for manufacturing and demonstrated the meaningful impact that well-designed products can have on people’s lives.
Looking toward the future, Eli’s goal is to become an industrial designer and manufacturer focused on creating innovative products that help more people enjoy the outdoors while reducing the environmental impact of the industry. He hopes to combine practical machining skills, sustainable materials and creative design thinking to develop products that are both functional and environmentally responsible. Whether through designing recyclable components, repurposing manufacturing waste or creating longer-lasting outdoor equipment, Eli is committed to being part of the solution to the industry’s sustainability challenges.
Eli has consistently demonstrated the qualities that contribute to success in manufacturing. He has challenged himself through advanced coursework, developed leadership skills through his involvement in DECA and gained valuable hands-on experience in both the outdoor recreation and van-life industries. His innovative mindset is reflected in projects ranging from creating cardboard templates for terrain park features to experimenting with custom fabrication techniques. These experiences showcase his creativity, determination and willingness to seek new solutions to complex problems.
Most importantly, Eli is committed to continual growth and learning. His passion for manufacturing extends beyond the classroom and workplace, driving him to seek opportunities that expand his technical knowledge and practical skills. With a clear vision for the future and a genuine desire to make a positive impact, Eli is well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to the manufacturing industry and help shape a more sustainable future for outdoor recreation.
