Emma Standen, a scholarship recipient from the Twin Cities District, has demonstrated remarkable determination and commitment as a non-traditional college student pursuing a new career path in machining. After spending seven years in the workforce, she made the significant decision to return to school and pursue a field that aligns with her interests, strengths and long-term goals. Her motivation stems from a desire to improve her career opportunities, support her family and challenge herself through meaningful work that engages both her creativity and technical abilities.

Returning to school was not a decision Emma made lightly. She carefully considered the opportunities and challenges associated with changing careers before committing to a path in manufacturing. She was drawn to machining because it allows her to combine technical precision with creative problem-solving. The profession appeals to her detail-oriented nature and her desire to create things that have real-world applications. She appreciates that machinists play a critical role in producing the components and products that support countless industries, requiring a blend of craftsmanship, technical expertise and precision.

Since beginning her studies, Emma has developed skills on a variety of manual machines, including mills, lathes and grinders. She is currently expanding her technical knowledge by learning CNC mill operation and programming. Her dedication to mastering these skills has already produced impressive results. During her first semester, she earned a place on the Dean’s List with a perfect 4.0 GPA, demonstrating her strong work ethic and commitment to academic excellence. She is especially interested in the programming side of machining and looks forward to continuing to develop her expertise as her career progresses.

Although Emma has not yet worked in a machine shop, she is actively seeking internship opportunities to gain hands-on industry experience. She is interested in exploring positions with both small job shops and larger production facilities, recognizing the valuable learning opportunities each environment can provide. Her willingness to pursue a variety of experiences reflects her commitment to growing her skills and gaining a broad understanding of the manufacturing industry.

An important aspect of Emma’s goals extends beyond her own professional development. She hopes to serve as a positive role model within her community by demonstrating that rewarding careers in manufacturing are accessible to everyone. By pursuing success in a field that has traditionally been male dominated, she aims to encourage other girls and women to explore opportunities in skilled trades and advanced manufacturing. She believes that increasing awareness of these career paths can help open doors for future generations.

Emma’s determination, diligence and curiosity have been key factors in her success both inside and outside the classroom. Having grown up in a lower-income family, she understands the value of hard work and perseverance. Throughout her life, she has consistently sought opportunities to improve herself and build a better future. She brings that same drive and dedication to her machining studies each day, positioning herself for a successful career in the manufacturing industry.

Excited about the opportunities ahead, Emma is embracing the challenge of changing careers and proving that it is never too late to pursue a new path.
