Gavin Mitchell, a scholarship recipient from the Tennessee District, is driven by a deep curiosity about how things are designed, engineered and built. From the complexity of microchips to the electrical power systems that distribute energy across entire cities, he has always been fascinated by the technologies that shape the modern world. This curiosity has inspired a strong interest in engineering and a desire to continually expand his knowledge within the field.
As a student at Franklin High School, Gavin participated in the Architecture and Engineering program, where he developed a particular passion for design and structural systems. His interest in design translated naturally into computer-aided design (CAD) and technical problem-solving. Over three years, he gained experience using Revit and AutoCAD through both his engineering coursework and the ACE Mentorship Program. Working collaboratively on year-long projects and presenting his work to large audiences helped him build practical skills in planning, communication, diligence and precision. These experiences have provided a strong foundation for his future career in engineering.
Gavin also completed a high school engineering study program and earned OSHA safety certifications, giving him a deeper understanding of workplace safety standards and the responsibilities associated with engineering and manufacturing environments. His training reinforced the importance of maintaining safe practices while working in technical and industrial settings.
A significant influence on Gavin’s career aspirations has been his internship with Link Electric. Through site visits, project exposure and conversations with professional engineers, he gained valuable insight into the real-world engineering process from project conception through completion. Observing the dedication, professionalism and attention to detail demonstrated by experienced engineers strengthened his commitment to pursuing a degree in engineering. The internship also taught him the importance of teamwork and effective communication between engineers, contractors and consultants. Through these experiences, Gavin developed an appreciation for the collaboration required to successfully manage complex engineering projects.
Outside the classroom, Gavin has balanced challenging academics with athletics and extracurricular involvement. He has participated in soccer, cross-country and robotics, demonstrating both discipline and time management skills. His involvement in the FIRST Robotics program allowed him to help lead his team in international competition while gaining hands-on experience in mechanical design, coding and robot construction. These experiences strengthened his problem-solving abilities and provided practical applications of many of the concepts used in engineering and manufacturing.
Looking ahead, Gavin plans to pursue a career in engineering where he can contribute to innovation and workforce development. He is committed to applying the principles of precision, safety and continuous improvement that are essential to both engineering and manufacturing. Through his educational experiences, technical training, leadership activities and hands-on engineering opportunities, Gavin has established a strong foundation for success in the field.
