Leo Valdez, a scholarship recipient from the Southern New England District, has developed a deep passion for machining through his love of working with his hands, creating new things and solving problems. He views machining as much more than a job; it is a career path that aligns with his strengths, interests and long-term goals. The challenges involved in machining require critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which Leo enjoys because they encourage him to think deeply and develop practical solutions. These qualities have helped shape his commitment to pursuing a lifelong career in manufacturing.
Leo’s goal is to become a highly skilled machinist who contributes to the success of the company he works for by improving product quality and fostering a positive work environment. He believes that technical expertise and strong teamwork go hand in hand. In addition to mastering his craft, he hopes to bring encouragement and support to those around him while helping create a workplace culture focused on continuous improvement.
One of Leo’s long-term aspirations is to be recognized as an expert in machining. He hopes to use his knowledge and experience to mentor others, improve manufacturing processes and help coworkers develop their own skills. He values continuous learning and believes that every day presents an opportunity to improve both personally and professionally. His commitment to growth extends beyond his own development, as he is equally passionate about helping others succeed.
Throughout his time in school, Leo has demonstrated dedication, perseverance and a strong work ethic. He earned several awards and recognitions, including Perfect Attendance, Most Improved in Shop and Excellence in Biology. These accomplishments reflect his commitment to academic achievement, technical skill development and personal growth. His ability to excel in both classroom and hands-on environments demonstrates the discipline and determination necessary for success in manufacturing.
Leo has also gained valuable industry experience through his work at Sikorsky Aircraft. In this role, he has worked with sheet metal and operated various machines used in the aerospace manufacturing process. This experience has provided him with a greater understanding of precision manufacturing, quality standards and workplace safety. It has also taught him the importance of viewing parts and processes from multiple perspectives to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Working in a team-oriented aerospace environment has strengthened his appreciation for collaboration and attention to detail.
Leo is passionate about machining and consistently strives for excellence in everything he does.
