Nathan Schiesl – Ferris State University, Weld Engineering Technology
Scholarship Amount: $3,000

Nathan’s journey into welding began at age 14 when he fabricated a racing lawn mower, sparking a passion that led him to enroll in welding courses at his local community college. His advocacy for manufacturing career pathways led his high school to introduce welding courses, creating opportunities for future students. As the first student from his school to participate in a registered apprenticeship, he is paving the way for others interested in skilled trades.
Beyond welding, Nathan has gained valuable experience in a variety of roles, from designing and fabricating terrain park features at Sundown Mountain to working in parts management at Link Hydraulic. His work at Dubuque Ice Arena and Q Casino has further strengthened his interpersonal and problem-solving skills. These diverse opportunities have shaped him into a well-rounded, adaptable professional.
Nathan’s leadership extends beyond the workplace. He has been recognized as a Dubuque Area Youth Leadership Council Top Male Finalist and was one of 37 students nationwide selected for the National Council on Youth Leadership’s Town Meeting on Tomorrow. His initiative and service projects have earned national recognition, including an Invisalign Change Maker Award and a Hershey Foundation Grant for organizing volunteer efforts with the Miracle League of Dubuque.
Set to attend Ferris State University in fall 2025 for a Bachelor’s in Welding Engineering Technology, Nathan is eager to continue expanding his expertise in welding and manufacturing. With a strong foundation in technical skills, leadership and innovation, he is poised to make a lasting impact on the industry and inspire future generations of skilled tradespeople.
