Southern New England Spends the Day Exploring Precision Manufacturing at Acme Wire

It was a day filled with insights, exploration and a deep dive into the world of wire components and fabricated parts at Acme Wire Products in Mystic, CT. With a warm welcome and a brief introduction, the stage was set for an immersive journey into the company’s operations.

Acme Wire Products Co., Inc. has a storied history, dating back to its founding in 1970 in Norwich, CT. The company has evolved over the years, and in 1979, it found its current home in Mystic, CT. Today, it is owned and run by the second-generation sibling team of Edward Planeta, Jr., Michael Planeta, and Mary Planeta Fitzgerald—a testament to the family values and dedication that drive the company’s success.

Precision Wire Components and Fabricated Parts

Acme Wire Products specializes in crafting custom wire components and fabricated parts using steel and stainless steel wire ranging from .062” to .500” in diameter. The array of capabilities is awe-inspiring, including cutting, bending, threading, 2D and 3D CNC forming, resistance spot welding, ARC welding, robotic welding, and automated grid welding systems. In-house, specialized tooling design and building are at the core of their precision manufacturing prowess.

A Tour to Remember

The tour offered an immersive experience, covering a range of manufacturing processes. Participants had the opportunity to witness various wire forming techniques, single and multiple head resistance spot welding, robotic arc welding, grid welding and press brake forming, and even got a glimpse of the powder paint coating process. It was an education in the precision and artistry that go into each component.

The event was not limited to any one category of professionals. It welcomed toolroom managers, tool & die makers, mechanical engineers, manufacturing engineers, tool design engineers, quality engineers and engineering managers—a testament to the broad appeal and relevance of the insights gained during the tour.
